The Nilgiris’ second hill station, and the one that still feels unhurried.
If Ooty is the well-known cousin, Coonoor is the one who stayed home and kept things simple. It’s about 20 kilometres closer to Coimbatore, sits a little lower at 1,850 metres, and doesn’t get anywhere near the same weekend crowds.
We send a fair number of couples and older travellers here specifically because it’s calmer. The tea estates around Coonoor also happen to be some of the most photogenic in the Nilgiris, with working factories you can actually walk through.
September through May works well, with October-February being the most comfortable temperature-wise. Coonoor is slightly warmer than Ooty at night, which some travellers actually prefer. May is busy with Ooty overflow visitors; if you want it quiet, aim for a weekday in October or February.
A short list of stops most of our Coonoor packages build the day around — not an exhaustive list, but the ones worth planning your time for.
A 12-hectare botanical garden laid out in 1874 with a mix of temperate species — noticeably cooler and quieter than Ooty's botanical garden.
A rock outcrop with a view down into the Catherine Falls gorge and the plains beyond. Clearest early morning before cloud cover builds up.
A short walk from the car park to a viewpoint over tea and coffee estates, with the Coonoor river valley below.
A working tea estate with factory tours explaining the withering, rolling and drying process — worth it if you actually want to understand tea, not just photograph it.
Ruins associated with Tipu Sultan on a ridge with views toward Mettupalayam — a quieter, less-visited stop most tourists skip.

From Coimbatore, the route runs via Mettupalayam and the same ghat road used for Ooty, branching off before the final climb — about 2 hours 15 minutes in normal conditions.
Coonoor has its own station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line. The nearest broad-gauge connection is Mettupalayam, reachable from Coimbatore Junction.
Coimbatore International Airport is the closest airport, roughly 2-2.5 hours away by road.
For most people who want fewer crowds and shorter walks between viewpoints, yes. Ooty has more to see overall, but Coonoor is easier to relax in.
Yes, this is one of our more common package requests — Coonoor on day one, Ooty on day two, with the vehicle staying with you throughout.
Some estates charge a small entry fee that usually includes a tasting; a few are free but request you buy tea afterward. Your driver can suggest ones matching what you’re looking for.
It’s a ghat road with turns but noticeably gentler than the Ooty stretch beyond it. Most people handle it fine without motion sickness medication.
