Ooty earned the nickname “Queen of Hill Stations” a long time before Instagram existed, and it still holds up. The town sits at 2,240 metres, ringed by tea estates that turn a deeper green every time the monsoon clouds roll through.
Most of our Ooty bookings start the same way: a family wants two or three days away from the heat, someone mentions the toy train, and the plan builds from there. We run this route often enough to know which viewpoints get crowded by 10 AM and which ones don’t.
October to June covers most of what people come for. December and January get genuinely cold at night, which some travellers love and others aren’t prepared for — pack accordingly.
April and May are peak season with the flower show and school holidays, so book your vehicle at least a week out. Monsoon July-September brings mist and fewer crowds, but landslide-related road delays are possible on the ghat sections.

The most common route is Coimbatore to Mettupalayam, then up the ghat road through around three dozen hairpin bends to Ooty — roughly 3 hours in normal traffic. An alternate route via Coonoor is slightly longer but less steep.
Ooty has its own railway station, the upper terminus of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. If you’re coming by regular train first, Coimbatore Junction is the nearest broad-gauge station, followed by the toy train from Mettupalayam.
Coimbatore International Airport is the nearest airport, about 3 hours from Ooty by road. We can arrange pickup directly from arrivals.
Two days covers the main sights comfortably. Three days lets you add Coonoor or Pykara without rushing. A lot of our weekend bookings do a 2 Days / 1 Night package and still see the lake, Doddabetta and the botanical garden.
Yes, though it’s a long day — about 6 hours of driving plus sightseeing time. It works better if you’re focused on 2-3 spots rather than trying to cover everything.
A Toyota Innova or Innova Crysta handles five people and luggage comfortably on the ghat road. For families of 6-7 with more luggage, the Xylo is a solid budget alternative.
