Poovar is far enough from Coimbatore — close to Thiruvananthapuram, at Kerala’s southern tip — that we plan it as part of a longer south Kerala trip rather than a standalone booking. What you get for the distance is a genuinely unusual stretch of coast, where a backwater lagoon runs parallel to the Arabian Sea, separated by little more than a sandbar in places.
The floating cottages here get a lot of the marketing attention, and they’re worth it if that’s the experience you’re after, but the boat ride through the lagoon itself, past mangroves, is honestly the better part.

Via Madurai, Nagercoil and Thiruvananthapuram, roughly 7 hours 45 minutes — one of the longer packages we quote, generally planned with an overnight stop en route.
Thiruvananthapuram Central is the nearest major railway station, about 45 minutes from Poovar.
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the nearest airport, roughly 40 minutes from Poovar — often the more practical option than the full road trip from Coimbatore.
If a golden-sand beach and lagoon cruise are what you’re after, yes — but given the distance, we’d suggest combining it with Kovalam or flying into Thiruvananthapuram instead of a same-day round trip by road.
Yes, they’re only 30-40 minutes apart, and this is one of the more common ways we package this part of the trip.
A day trip covers the lagoon cruise and beach comfortably. The floating cottages are worth it mainly if you want to experience sunset and sunrise on the water itself.
