Thanjavur was the seat of the Chola empire at its height, and the Brihadeeswarar Temple built here around 1010 CE is still standing as one of the most complete pieces of that history — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a tower over 200 feet tall, capped by a single granite block estimated at 80 tonnes.
This is a history-and-architecture trip more than a scenic one, and we generally recommend allowing real time at the temple rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.
November to February avoids the region’s hotter months. The temple complex has limited shade, so an early morning or late afternoon visit is more comfortable than midday in any season.
