It works well both as its own day trip and as a stop on the way to Kodaikanal, since the Palani ghat road is the same route continuing on toward the hill station.
Year-round, though the hill town is naturally a little cooler than the plains below. Thai Poosam (January-February) and Panguni Uthiram (March-April) bring large festival crowds — good for atmosphere, more crowded for darshan.
