The oldest of the Nilgiri hill stations, and still the least crowded.
Kotagiri was the first hill station the British settled in the Nilgiris, before Ooty took over as the main attraction. That history left it a little overlooked, which is exactly why some travellers prefer it now.
There’s less to “do” here in the checklist sense — no big lake, no crowded mall road — and more to just look at. The valley views from Kodanad alone are worth the detour if you’ve got an extra half-day.
September to May, with October-January giving the clearest views from Kodanad. It rarely gets as cold here as Ooty, so it’s a reasonable pick even in early winter if you don’t want the harsher night temperatures.

A two-tier waterfall roughly 250 feet high, named after the wife of a 19th-century coffee planter — most striking just after monsoon.
A quieter, less-visited falls close to town, easier to reach than Catherine Falls if you're short on time.
Overlooks the Moyar river valley and, on clear days, distant hills of Karnataka — one of the best sunrise spots in the district.
A protected patch of native shola forest with walking trails, home to several endemic bird species if you're patient and quiet.
A small colonial-era church that gives a sense of Kotagiri's older, less commercial history compared to Ooty.

Via Mettupalayam and Coonoor, roughly 2 hours 45 minutes from Coimbatore. The last stretch to Kodanad is a narrower road, so we generally recommend a sedan or SUV rather than a large bus for that particular detour.
The nearest railway station on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway line is Coonoor, about 30 minutes from Kotagiri by road. Mettupalayam connects to the broad-gauge network.
Coimbatore International Airport, about 2.5-3 hours by road, is the nearest airport.
If you enjoyed the tea-estate scenery but wanted fewer people around, yes. It’s a genuinely different pace, not just a smaller version of Ooty.
The main road handles it, but the final approach lane is narrow — we’d suggest a sedan, SUV or tempo traveller rather than a full-size bus for that specific stop.
A full day covers Catherine Falls, Kodanad and a tea estate stop comfortably. It also works well as a half-day add-on to a Coonoor or Ooty package.
