Thekkady, inside the Periyar Tiger Reserve, is actually one of the closer Kerala destinations from Coimbatore — under 4 hours via Udumalpet and Kumily, which makes it an easier add-on to a Munnar trip than most people expect.
The reserve’s boat safari on Periyar Lake is the headline draw, but the spice plantations around Kumily town are worth equal time if you’ve never seen cardamom, pepper and cinnamon actually growing.
September to May for the boat safari and walks; October-February is coolest. Monsoon brings lush plantation scenery but can limit some walking trails.
