Athirapally Falls drops around 24 metres in a wide curtain that’s shown up in enough Malayalam and Bollywood films that a lot of visitors recognise it before they’ve ever been — the nickname “Niagara of India” gets thrown around a lot, and while that’s more marketing than measurement, the volume of water here in season genuinely earns the comparison.
It’s usually a day-trip destination rather than an overnight one, often combined with the quieter Vazhachal Falls just a short drive further into the forest.
October to January, right after monsoon, when water volume is at its most impressive. April-May sees the falls thin out considerably, so if the waterfall itself is the priority, avoid peak summer.
